A crypto transfer takes as long as its network needs to confirm it: seconds on Tron, minutes on Ethereum, about an hour for six Bitcoin confirmations
A transaction is fast or slow mostly because of the chain it runs on. Bitcoin adds a block about every 10 minutes, Monero about every 2 minutes, Ethereum every 12 seconds and Tron every 3 seconds. A receiver usually waits for several blocks, a number of confirmations, before treating the funds as final. A low fee can leave a transaction waiting in the mempool for much longer.
One more block added on top of the block that contains your transaction. Each confirmation makes it harder to reverse (Bitcoin developer guide). A transaction with 0 confirmations has been broadcast but is not yet in any block.
How long does each network take?
The chart shows the average time per block on each chain. Pick a chain and enter the confirmations the receiver asks for to see the average wait.

How many confirmations does a Bitcoin transaction need?
Each user or service decides when a transaction is confirmed enough.
Bitcoin.org notes that 6 confirmations are often considered as safe as waiting 6 months on a credit card transaction, and the developer guide recommends at least six for high-value payments.
Block discovery is random, so a single confirmation can come much sooner or much later than 10 minutes.
Other chains use different terms for the same idea:
- Ethereum: time runs in 12-second slots and 32-slot epochs. A finalized block cannot be reverted without a majority of stakers being slashed.
- Tron: a block is solidified once at least 19 of the 27 Super Representatives have built on it, typically in about a minute.
- Solana: there is typically a gap of at least 32 slots between the most recent confirmed block and the most recent finalized one.
- Monero: newly received XMR needs 10 confirmations before it can be spent.
What does it mean when a transaction is stuck in the mempool?
The mempool is where a transaction waits until a block includes it. There is no single mempool: every node keeps its own (CoinMarketCap Academy).
Network congestion is the main reason transactions get stuck.
On Bitcoin, fees are quoted in sat/vB, and blocks are filled with the highest-paying transactions first.
If the fee is set too low, a transaction can stay pending for a long time or never confirm at all (Trezor).
How do I speed up an unconfirmed Bitcoin transaction?
Replace-By-Fee (RBF)
- The sender replaces the transaction with one that spends the same inputs.
- The replacement must pay a higher fee rate and a higher absolute fee (BIP125).
- Only the sender can do it.
Child Pays For Parent (CPFP)
- A new child transaction spends an output of the stuck one with a high fee.
- Miners are paid to confirm both together.
- The sender or the receiver can do it.
If neither is available, a stuck Bitcoin transaction either confirms eventually or drops from mempools after a couple of weeks, and the funds stay in the wallet (Ledger Academy).
Can I cancel a pending Ethereum transaction?
Every Ethereum account has a nonce. A pending transaction can be sped up by resubmitting it with a higher gas fee, or cancelled by sending 0 ETH to your own address with the same nonce (ethereum.org). Either way, the replacement still costs gas.
A pending transaction means the funds are lost.
A pending transaction has not happened yet. It confirms, gets replaced, or drops and leaves the funds where they were.
More confirmations always take the same time.
Bitcoin blocks arrive at random. Six confirmations average about an hour, but any single block can be much faster or slower.
Sending again fixes a stuck transfer.
A second transfer is a second payment. Use RBF or CPFP on Bitcoin, or a same-nonce replacement on Ethereum.
How this affects a swap
An instant swap can't complete until the deposit has the confirmations the service requires. That is why swap times differ by the chain you send from.
- SimpleSwap: under 1 min on fast chains, 10 to 30 min on BTC and ETH, and 1 to 60 min for all pairs per its FAQ.
- ChangeNOW: about 1 minute published average.
On a slow deposit chain, a fixed rate keeps the market from moving the amount you receive while you wait.
Questions
How many confirmations does a Bitcoin transaction need?
The receiver decides. Six confirmations, about an hour on average, is the level the Bitcoin developer guide suggests for high-value payments. Many services credit smaller amounts after fewer.
Why is my crypto transaction taking so long to confirm?
Usually because the network is busy and the fee you paid is below what blocks are currently including. On Bitcoin, the fee rate in sat/vB decides the order.
How long does an Ethereum transaction take to be final?
Blocks come every 12 seconds, and ethereum.org states that a block takes about 15 minutes to finalize, across two epochs.
What does it mean when a transaction has 0 confirmations?
It has been broadcast to the network but is not yet in a block. It should generally not be treated as final.
Why is my received Monero balance locked?
Newly received Monero needs 10 confirmations before it can be spent. With a block about every 2 minutes, that is roughly 20 minutes.
How long does a TRON (TRC-20) transfer take to confirm?
Tron produces a block every 3 seconds, and a block becomes solidified, or irreversible, typically in about a minute.
